How to choose which Water Purifier to Buy?

Nowadays, I see many people confused when it comes to deciding which Water Purifier they should buy. Generally, people think more the technologies used and greater the number of filtration stages better is the Water Purifier. Also for many out there Water Purifier means RO but in reality, things are totally different. So in this post, I will try to explain how we can decide which Water Purifier is best for us.

Confused, Which Water Purifier to Buy?

To start with first we should briefly cover the types of Water Purification technologies used

1. Reverse Osmosis or RO: In RO technology water is passed under high pressure from a semi permeable membrane with pore diameter of approx. 0.0001 micron. This is the most powerful technology which filters out around 95% of impurities, metals, micro-organisms and minerals. The output water received from this technology is though very pure and transparent but is also devoid of many important minerals needed by our body.
2. Nano Filtration or NF: NF technology works predominantly on the same principle as RO but its membrane has a pore diameter of approx. 0.001 micron hence does remove lesser impurities + minerals from water.
3. Ultra Filtration or UF: UF technology works without electricity unlike above two technologies and in this technology water is passed from multiple hollow fibre like structures with pore diameter of approx. 0.01 micron. In this technology water can be purified without hampering the mineral content of water.
4. Ultra Violet or UV: This technology is used to kill any remaining microorganisms. This uses a UV lamp to kill tiny living microorganisms via UV Rays.

Which technology to choose?

We need that water purifier which is best as per our need, removes impurities as well as maintain the mineral content of water too. So first we need to evaluate the TDS (stands for Total Dissolved Solids which is the measure of dissolved impurities, metals and minerals in water) content of the water supply which we are getting.

So first get a TDS Meter (Click Here to Buy Now from Amazon) of approx. 200-300 bucks and note down the TDS of your water supply. Below table depicts the Water Quality as per TDS range.

Hence after knowing the TDS of our Tap Water and following BIS guidelines we can conclude
